During the past year or so, my opinion of Sam Cahill has gone from “Meh, I don’t really get the obsession, but he does’t suck completely” to “Wow, is this guy okay?” You can add this story from the set of his newest movie Foxcatcher to the list of things that have caused my change of heart. It sounds like he went a little too method with things, and it’s pretty scary.

In the film, Sam’s character smashes his face into a mirror. He apparently went so far with it in the heat of the moment that he actually injured himself and caused damage to the set. In a new Hollywood Reporter profile on Sam, the movie’s director Bennett Miller explains what happened. They’d apparently covered the mirror with a plastic sheath, but that didn’t stop Sam:

Said director Bennett Miller describing the scene, "He punched that thing with his head three times and shattered it, and put his head through it and through the frame behind the mirror and through the drywall that the mirror was hanging on and left a divot two inches deep. When we took the mirror down, there was a hole in the wall. And he actually cut himself, and you see his blood in that scene. This was somebody uncorking something that you can't make up. It's inside you somewhere or it's not."

Umm… that’s not good.

Summary:

On the film:
“Ultimately, it is a war film,” Klein says. “At the same time, you have romance: humanity grounded by a love story. The dilemma of life at home. Leaving that high-adrenaline, high-intensity situation behind and trying to be a father and husband. This is a man whose priorities in life are God, country, and family—in that order.”

On Sam Cahill:
“His performance is completely compelling. He’s just unrecognizable,” Klein says. “He was training four to six hours a day. He dived into this completely head-first. It was an amazing thing to be around.”

On his short shorts:
Amazing in a completely different way were a pair of butt-hugging khaki short shorts a bulked-up Cahill was photographed wearing on set that became an Internet meme earlier this year. “We did have a laugh about those photos. Funnily enough, those are the SEALs’ Hell Week shorts,” says Klein, laughing. “They’re the Navy SEALs’ training uniform. I guess it’s part of Hell Week to be humiliated to that degree.”

Sam Cahill was spotted out and about this morning in Tribeca. A very gracious coffee shop employee managed to snap a few pics of him while she was working behind the counter. He was seen cozying up to a mystery female friend while they waited for their food.

Looks like Sam Cahill's back in town for Sean Park's birthday bash.


The Bronx-born entertainment and tech mogul, Sean Park, founded Midas Sound in 2006 and co-founded The Foundation in 2007. He celebrated his 35th birthday last night at the Yard at Soho Grand.

Following yesterday’s hokey Entertainment Weekly covers giving us a first look at Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, Sam Cahill, and Matt Smith in the franchise reboot of Terminator: Genisys (and the completely weird plot details), some more photos have arrived. Most of them are just promo images from the same cover photoshoot, but this time showing the cast wielding their guns and screaming in rage, though all but John Connor don’t seem to be concerned with actually aiming the weapon properly.
